Ribbon KeyTips

  • 2 minutes to read

KeyTips provide quick keyboard access to the following Ribbon control elements:

When an end-user presses the Alt key, KeyTips appear for all visible tab headers, the Application Button, and item links within the Quick Access Toolbar and Tab Area Toolbar.

For a radial menu, KeyTips appear for the central button and menu commands (item links).

A KeyTip is a string that represents keystrokes required to access a Ribbon element. The maximum length of a KeyTip is three characters. Typing the keys associated with any Ribbon element activates this element, or executes the action associated with it. When a tab is activated, KeyTips appear for item links, collapsed tab groups, and toolbar title buttons within this tab.

The following image shows the result of pressing the ‘H’ key associated with the ‘Home’ tab.

Using KeyTips, end-users can access Ribbon elements within collapsed tab groups, and display the contents of these groups by scrolling them into view.

As seen from the image above, there are five KeyTips starting with the ‘F’ character. Pressing this character hides other KeyTips.

You can use KeyTips to access the Application Menu’s galleries, groups, items and their pins.

By default, KeyTips are created based on shortcuts and accelerator keys specified via the element’s ShortCut and Caption properties. To specify KeyTips for Ribbon elements, use the following properties:

The radial menu’s central button is automatically assigned the number 0 (zero) KeyTip, which cannot be modified.

Note

KeyTips for tabs, the Application Button, Application Menu elements and the radial menu’s central button should be unique to the Ribbon control, and KeyTips for Ribbon elements within a tab should be unique to this tab.
